A Workshop Built Around the Work, Not the Marketing
Cogwright opened in Damansara Utama with one purpose: to give mechanical and quartz timepieces careful, documented bench work by people who understand what they are handling.

How Cogwright Came to Be
Cogwright was set up in Petaling Jaya by a small group of watchmakers who had spent years working in service centres attached to retail chains. What they found, repeatedly, was that the commercial pressure to turn pieces around quickly left little room for the kind of careful inspection and documentation that owners of fine watches actually need.
The name comes from the gear train — the ordered sequence of wheels, pinions and jewels that translates the mainspring's stored energy into the steady movement of hands. A cogwright, in the old craft tradition, was someone who shaped and fitted the individual teeth of a wheel so it would mesh correctly with its neighbour. That precision, applied one tooth at a time, is the idea behind this workshop.
We operate from a fixed address in Damansara Utama. There is no franchise behind us and no remote service centre processing work on our behalf. Each piece is received, assessed, worked on, and returned by the same small team. Owners know who is handling their watches and can speak to that person directly.
Our service offering is narrow by design. We cover three specific areas — water resistance testing and seal renewal, chronograph module servicing, and full mechanical overhauls — because doing a small number of things well is more useful than offering everything to a broad market. Pieces outside our current scope are referred to specialists we trust rather than attempted in-house.

Defined Scope
Every service has a written description of what it covers. Owners approve the scope before work begins, and any findings outside that scope are discussed rather than acted on silently.
Written Output
Each completed job is accompanied by a document — a pressure certificate, timing traces, a parts list, or a condition report. Owners leave with a record of what was done and why.
Direct Communication
The person who receives your watch is the person you speak with about the work. There is no customer service layer between the owner and the bench.

The Workshop Team
Razif Hamdan
Lead Watchmaker
Sixteen years on the bench, with particular depth in Swiss lever escapements and column-wheel chronograph modules. Razif handles the overhaul and chronograph service assessments.
Lim Chin Wei
Pressure Testing Specialist
Chin Wei manages all water resistance testing and seal renewal work. He trained at a dive-watch service centre in Kuala Lumpur and has tested several thousand cases over his career.
Priya Nair
Documentation & Client Liaison
Priya manages all written output — certificates, condition reports, parts sheets — and is the first contact for owners dropping off pieces or following up on their service status.

Quality and Workshop Standards
WOSTEP-Aligned Training
Our watchmakers completed training aligned with WOSTEP (Watchmaking Organisation of Schools Teaching Expertise and Professionalism) curriculum standards before joining the bench.
ISO 22810 Test Protocol
Water resistance testing follows the ISO 22810 standard methodology. Both dry air-pressure and wet testing are performed. Results and gasket specifications are recorded on a signed certificate.
Ultrasonic Cleaning In-House
All ultrasonic cleaning of movement components is performed on our own equipment at Damansara Utama. Calibrated solutions and rinse cycles are documented per batch.
Six-Position Rate Verification
Movements are measured on a timing machine across six positions after reassembly. Results are included in the service documentation so owners have an objective record of regulation.
Secure Storage During Service
Pieces in service are stored in individually labelled, locked compartments. Access is restricted to the watchmaker assigned to that job. Owners receive a written receipt on drop-off.
Personal Data Handling
Contact details collected at drop-off are used only for communication about the specific service. We do not share owner information with third parties or use it for marketing purposes.

Watch and Clock Servicing in the Klang Valley
Malaysia's climate — high humidity for most of the year, frequent exposure to air conditioning condensation, and a coastal proximity in much of the peninsula — means that water resistance maintenance is not an optional extra for watch owners. Gaskets degrade faster than many manufacturers' service intervals suggest. An annual or biennial pressure test is a practical discipline rather than a precaution taken only by divers.
Cogwright's position in Damansara Utama gives watch owners in Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, and Kuala Lumpur a fixed workshop address they can visit in person. Unlike postal service arrangements, owners can discuss their piece face to face, see the workshop, and build an ongoing relationship with the people responsible for the work.
For chronograph owners, the return-to-zero function is one of the most mechanically demanding operations a wristwatch performs. The column wheel, cam, clutch springs, and hammer all need to operate within very tight tolerances for the seconds hand to land cleanly on the zero marker. When that zero return becomes inconsistent — landing a degree or two past the marker, or overshooting slightly — the chronograph module needs attention. Our service covers the full dismantling, cleaning, spring renewal, and re-timing of that sequence.
Full overhauls are scheduled for pieces that have accumulated eight or more years of wear without bench work. By that point, lubricants have dried in ways that are invisible from the outside, pivot wear has usually begun, and the mainspring may be showing early fatigue. The overhaul schedule at Cogwright — six to nine weeks — allows the work to proceed without being rushed. Every stage is photographed, and owners receive a condition report that notes wear we observed and chose, in consultation with the owner, not to address.
